One-minute summary

The important points

  • Some people notice increased shedding after starting minoxidil.
  • Temporary shedding must not be assumed to explain every sudden or severe change.
  • Patchy loss, inflammation, pain or systemic symptoms need assessment.
  • Follow the instructions for the exact product and do not apply extra doses.

Why early shedding may happen

A change in the follicular growth cycle can cause older hairs to shed before a later growth phase becomes visible. This can be alarming, but timing, pattern and associated scalp symptoms matter.

Features that need another explanation

Marked shedding, bald patches, broken hairs, redness, scaling, pain, scarring or illness-related symptoms can point to a different diagnosis. Recent fever, surgery, rapid weight change, thyroid symptoms, nutritional restriction and medicines should be discussed.

Point Clinical meaning
Expected monitoring Date, pattern, product, technique and photographs.
Contact the clinician Severe irritation, dizziness, palpitations, swelling or troublesome symptoms.
Needs examination Patchy, inflamed, painful, scarring or diagnostically unclear loss.
Avoid Extra doses, application to damaged scalp or mixing products without advice.

What to record

Write down the start date, exact formulation, application frequency and any scalp reaction. Take consistent photographs. Do not increase the amount in an attempt to accelerate progress.
