Different treatments for different parts of the pathway
Finasteride reduces the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone through inhibition of 5-alpha reductase. Minoxidil is applied to the scalp and supports follicular activity through a different mechanism. The important first question is not which name is more popular, but whether the pattern is compatible with androgenetic alopecia and whether either option is safe for the individual.
What the doctor compares
The review considers the pattern and speed of loss, age, other medicines, scalp symptoms, mood history, sexual health concerns, blood pressure and previous treatment. Finasteride and minoxidil may sometimes be discussed together, but combining treatments does not remove the need to review risks, correct use and realistic expectations.

How long results take
